"The fairest Cape we ever saw in the whole circumference of the earth," exclaimed the great navigator Sir Francis Drake when he sailed into Table Bay in the year 1580. Through the centuries it has been called by many names: the Cape of Storms, by the Portuguese soldiers who forst navigated around the treacherous shores at Cape Point; the Cape of Good Hope, by those who survived the journey to enter the calmer waters of Table Bay; and for South Africans today, simply "the Cape" - an acknowledgement of its status as the Mother City, and of its unique character.
